The College Grove Recreation was formed in 1980.  With the high and middle schools gone from the elementary school, it was apparent that the elementary students needed some activities, so some of the parents began to inquire about starting basketball for our youth.  College Grove had a great gym and it was not being used.  With the help of Jimmy Burchett and Chuck Clarkson and several devoted parents the basketball program was formed and we started with about 50 children both girls and boys.  As the years went by, the program begin to grow and continues to grow today.  The first commissioners for the program were Janie Rakes and Margi Thoni.  Stokley and Elaine Watkins kept the clock and books for about 10 years.    Parents volunteered to help with organizing the teams, coaching, running the concession stand and keeping the clock and score books.  Every Saturday the doors were opened, hot dogs cooking, popcorn and many parents to help.  We at that time had to present a budget to the county and help with the expense for our program.  The charge for each student to participate was $25.00, but no child was turned away.  As our children began to grow up the program grew and new parents got involved. This was true even for the baseball teams at College Grove Elementary.  The College Grove children played under the franchise of Williamson/Rutherford and then several years later started playing under the College Grove League franchise. At this time we only had baseball, but girls played as well.  This program was run with volunteer parents and Stokley Watkins served as commissioner.  This program has grown over the years to having baseball and softball teams.
